One of the most popular candies on the shelf today is skittles.
The box of little multi coloured candies that has “taste the rainbow” as their slogan...it sounds delightful doesn’t it?
Unfortunately (I’m sure you won’t be surprised to hear this) the ingredients are anything but
delightful.
Take a look:
Sugar, Glucose Syrup, Vegetable Oil, Food Acids (330, 331), Thickener (Dextrin), Modified Corn Starch, Flavour,
Colours (171, 129, 110, 132, 133), Glazing Agent (903).
Now while it might not be a long list of ingredients…I
cannot overstate how bad these ingredients are.
You have sugar, more sugar, vegetable oil (it’s actually industrial seed oil, there’s no such thing as vegetable
oil!) and then a bunch of chemicals thrown together with some corn starch that’s probably made from GMO corn!
There’s nothing good here whatsoever…no protein, no fat, no fibre, no vitamins or minerals whatsoever. But as bad as
this whole list is, I just want to focus in on the set of 5 numbers at the end there, the colours and flavours. You’ve probably seen these numbers before, they appear in so many products, but do you know what these numbers actually mean? I was shocked to discover just how bad these little numbers actually are!
Let’s take a closer look at them…
129 (Allura Red AC): A dark red powder that’s made from either coal tar or petroleum (take your pick right?). This dye has been linked to hyperactivity in kids and may also cause allergic reactions in some people.
110 (Sunset Yellow FCF): Another commonly used dye that’s also made from coal tar, this additive has been linked to hyperactivity, ADHD, and behavioral problems in kids. It may also cause allergic reactions and trigger asthma symptoms in some people.
132 (Indigo Carmine): This blue dye has been linked to allergic reactions, hyperactivity and potential carcinogenic effects.
133 (Brilliant Blue FCF): Another blue dye that has been linked to hyperactivity and ADHD in children, as well as potential carcinogenic effects.
But I’ve saved the worst for last…
171 (Titanium dioxide): This additive is used as a whitening agent in foods and has been linked to inflammation, genotoxicity (damage to DNA) and potentially carcinogenic effects in the body.
Because of this titanium dioxide has been BANNED in the EU since 2022.
Yet it (and the others listed above) appears in one of the most popular confectionary brands in Australia and most
of the world. 200 Million individual skittles are made in factories around the world every single day.
A little label located on the bottom of every skittle box that says “Be treatwise” Followed by “Enjoy a balanced
diet”. This is Mars’s (the company behind Skittles and a bunch of other crap) way of pretending to look out for our kids health by encouraging moderation when in reality their only goal is to sell as much candy as possible.
In short, don’t give
this company or any others like them your support. Don’t buy Skittles, M&Ms, Snickers or Twix bars. These products provide no nutritional value and have no place in anyone’s diet. Our kids (and us!) truly deserve so much better.
It’s so important that we teach our kids the value of nutrient dense foods early on and make sure they are exposed
to as many fresh whole foods and as little ultra processed packaged foods as possible.
