THE LOCAL RESILIENCE PROJECT
Created by Lesley Gillett BA, Dip Ed,
MA
The Local Resilience Project was designed to help households assess and improve their resilience over 12 key areas of life. Its foundational belief is that once people have access to good, reliable information about resilience and ways for improving it, they will
feel empowered to make lifestyle changes for the benefit not only of their own households but of their children’s, their grandchildren's and their community’s.
How to Engage With The Local Resilience Project: Visit the website where you will find: The Conversation, The
Checklist and The Call To Action: https://localresilienceproject.org/.
The Checklist is the centrepiece of The Local Resilience Project, offering a comprehensive list of questions to sharpen your focus on what it takes to build a highly resilient
household capable of supporting you in the face of climatic, ecological, financial and economic disruptions.
The 12 areas of life it covers are:
community, psychology, practical skills, food, water, shelter, health, technology, finance, energy,
transport and security.
You can engage with The Checklist in two ways:
(i) Print out The Checklist, input your responses manually
then add up your YES and NO responses to receive your total score. YES =1 and NO = 0. Take this document with you to your Local Resilience Project Meeting to enrich your experience in group discussion.
(ii) Fill In The Checklist online and the site will automatically
generate your ‘resilience score’.
No data is captured, stored or shared from this site which we’ve made as secure as possible. If you choose to complete The Checklist online, it’s a good idea to also print out a copy, fill it in manually for your records and take it with you to your Local Resilience Project Meeting.
The Call To Action invites you to transform your Checklist NO’s into YES’s by sharing the journey with others. One of the best ways to accomplish this is to organise a Local Resilience Project Meeting where the audience participates by bringing along their completed Checklists, sharing their ideas with the group and discussing what future steps
might benefit their community. NB:There is no right or wrong here. No household’s resilience scores are ‘better’ than others. We’re all on this journey together and in a Local Resilience Project Meeting we do what resilient people do best - we share our knowledge, our skills & our questions without judgment or prejudice.
an quick example of the thought provoking questions include
| | COMMUNITY | YES | /NO |
1 | I am on a first name basis with most of my immediate neighbours.
2 | I have shared a meal with several of my immediate neighbours.
3 | I have a ‘shared capital purchase’ with a neighbour e.g. a lawn mower or goat.
4 | I know 3 people in my community who accept the need to strengthen resilience.
5 | Most of my friends and family are supportive of my efforts in towards resilience.
6 | I am actively working towards boosting the resilience of my local community.
7 | I have spoken with one of my local political representatives about resilience.
